How many people can fit in one square meter standing up?
At a concert or event with a standing audience, up to 4 people can occupy one square meter, since the guideline density is 0.25 m² per person. The authorized capacity may vary depending on the type of venue, the evacuation exits, and applicable regulations.
How is the capacity of people per m² calculated?
The capacity is calculated by dividing the usable area by the occupancy density. Corresponding to the use of the space:
Capacity = Usable Area (m²) ÷ Occupancy Density (m²/person)For example, a 200 m² space intended for standing audiences has an indicative capacity of 800 people (200 ÷ 0.25). If you manage events with variable capacity, an automated people counting system avoids relying on manual calculations at the door.

A 200 m² venue can have a very different capacity depending on its use:
- Standing audience (concerts or festivals): up to 800 people.
- Seated audience: approximately 133 people using a density of 1.5 m² per person.

How much space does a seated person occupy?
As a reference, a seated person needs between 1 and 1.5 m², depending on the type of space. In bars, restaurants, and classrooms, a density of 1.5 m² per person is usually used, while in theaters or auditoriums, the capacity is usually determined by the number of seats installed.
