With a simple tap, it identifies the wearer, controls their access to different areas of the venue and handles cashless payments.

At festivals, concerts, sporting events and conferences, NFC wristbands have replaced paper tickets and cash. Attendees wear their wristband throughout the event and use it to enter the venue, get into VIP areas and pay at bars, food trucks or merchandise stands.

NFC is the same technology that lets you pay with your phone at the supermarket or share a file by holding two phones together. Applied to events, it turns a wristband into a ticket, a wallet and an accreditation all at once.

How an NFC wristband works at a festival or event

An NFC wristband at an event works in three stages:

Before the event: activation and topping up

The organiser sets up the system and links each NFC wristband to a specific attendee. If the event is cashless, attendees can load credit onto their wristband before they arrive, from the event website or app, or in person at the top-up points in the venue.

At events with access control by area, each wristband is set up with the right permissions: general admission, VIP area, press area, backstage and so on.

During the event: entry and payment

On arrival, the attendee holds the wristband up to the access reader. The system validates entry in under a second and records the time. If they try to enter an area they do not have permission for, the reader detects it automatically.

To pay at a bar or any point of sale, the attendee holds the wristband up to the terminal. The credit is deducted automatically and the transaction is recorded in real time on the organiser’s dashboard.

After the event: refunding unused credit

If the attendee has not spent all the credit on their wristband, they can request a refund of the remaining balance through the channel the organiser provides, usually a form on the event website, within the set deadline.

NFC vs RFID event wristbands: what is the difference?

The terms NFC and RFID are often used interchangeably when talking about event wristbands, but they are not exactly the same thing.

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is the underlying technology that lets a chip and a reader communicate wirelessly using radio waves. It is an umbrella term covering several frequencies and standards.

NFC (Near Field Communication) is a specific type of RFID that operates at 13.56 MHz and over very short distances, less than 10 centimetres. It is the standard smartphones use for contactless payments and the one used in most modern event wristbands.

In practice, attendees notice no difference: in both cases they hold the wristband up to the reader and the system responds in under a second. The difference is technical and matters to the organiser: NFC systems are compatible with smartphones and offer greater data security, while some low-frequency RFID systems are cheaper but less versatile.

At Exyt we work with both NFC and RFID wristbands, depending on what each event needs, and make sure they are compatible with every reading system installed in the venue.

What NFC wristbands are used for at events

NFC wristbands have three main uses at events:

1. Access control with NFC wristbands

The NFC wristband works as the event ticket. On arrival, the attendee holds it up to the reader and the system validates access in real time. This removes queues at the entrance, reduces fraud with fake tickets and lets the organiser know how many people are inside the venue at any moment.

At events with several areas (VIP, backstage, press area, secondary stages), each wristband carries its own access permissions. An attendee with a general admission ticket cannot get into the VIP area, however hard they try: the reader detects it and refuses access automatically.

2. Cashless payment with NFC wristbands

An NFC wristband for payments works like a prepaid wallet. The attendee loads credit before or during the event and pays by holding the wristband up to the terminal at any point of sale in the venue. Payment takes less than a second, needs no PIN or confirmation, and the credit is deducted automatically.

For the organiser, a cashless system with NFC wristbands gives full visibility of sales: which products sell best, in which areas, at what times, and how much credit is still active in the venue at any moment.

3. Accreditation and staff management

NFC wristbands are also used to manage event staff: technicians, artists, press, volunteers and security. Each wristband is linked to a profile with the right access permissions, which simplifies accreditation and reduces errors at access points.

Advantages of NFC wristbands over paper tickets

NFC wristband

Paper ticket

Entry speed

Less than 1 second

3–5 seconds

Risk of forgery

Very low

High

Payments

Built in

Requires cash

Area control

Automatic

Manual

Real-time data

Yes

No

Attendee experience

No queues, no wallet

Queues, change

Does an NFC wristband work without an internet connection?

Yes. One of the key advantages of NFC wristbands at festivals and outdoor events is that the credit is stored on the wristband chip itself, not on a remote server. This means the system works even if there is no mobile coverage at the venue.

Payment terminals and access readers can work offline and sync the data with the central server when the connection comes back. For the attendee, it makes no difference at all: the wristband works the same with or without internet.

Frequently asked questions about NFC wristbands for events

Is it safe to pay with an NFC wristband? Yes. NFC works at less than 10 centimetres, which makes it practically impossible to intercept the signal from a distance. In addition, the credit is limited to the amount the attendee loaded, so the financial risk if the wristband is lost is limited. Most systems let you block a lost wristband.

What happens if I lose my wristband during the event? It depends on the system. In the most advanced cashless systems, the organiser can block the lost wristband and transfer the remaining credit to a new one. It is a good idea to explain this process to attendees before the event.

Can I use my phone instead of the NFC wristband? Some systems let you link the credit to an NFC smartphone, but at festivals and outdoor events the wristband is the best format: it never runs out of battery, it is water-resistant and attendees do not have to take out their phone for every payment.

Are NFC wristbands reusable? It depends on the type. Fabric wristbands with a built-in chip are usually single-use. Rigid plastic or silicone wristbands are reusable and are often used at multi-day events or at venues that host events regularly.

How much does it cost to set up an NFC wristband system at an event? The cost depends on the number of attendees, the type of wristband, the number of points of sale and whether you buy or rent the equipment. For events that do not want to invest in their own infrastructure, the most common model is to hire the complete service from a specialist provider, including wristbands, terminals, software and technical support.

Can NFC wristbands be customised with the event logo? Yes. Most providers offer wristbands customised with the event name, logo and colours. Customisation has a minimum order quantity and a production lead time, so it is worth planning it in advance.

How to choose an NFC wristband system for your event

If you are organising a festival, concert, sporting event or conference and are considering an NFC wristband system, these are the key factors to consider:

Number of attendees and points of sale. The system must be sized to handle the volume of your event. A festival of 10,000 people needs more terminals and top-up points than one of 1,000.

The features you need. Access control only, cashless only, or both? Some systems specialise in a single function, while integrated systems manage access, payments and accreditation from the same platform. An integrated solution is more efficient to run and gives attendees a better experience.

Working without internet. If your event takes place somewhere with limited coverage, make sure the system works offline. Not every provider guarantees this.

Technical support on the day. A system can work perfectly in testing and still have an incident on the day. Choose a provider that offers on-site or remote technical support during the event, not just during installation.

At Exyt we have been running NFC wristband systems for all kinds of events for years: from music festivals with tens of thousands of attendees to conferences, sporting events and graduation ceremonies.
